The Internships:

Each year, The Crown Estate hosts marine internship programmes across the UK, in collaboration with a variety of organisations within the marine renewable energy and conservation sectors. Interns carry out a range of relevant and impactful research projects, generating useful data and evidence and providing valuable insights to support marine industries. There is also the opportunity to collaborate with partner organisations, develop fieldwork skills across their internship regions, attend training courses, run community outreach events, engage with a variety of stakeholders, attend conferences and participate in occasional activities run at The Crown Estate London offices.

Programmes run for 6 months (July-December) with applications opening around March. You can find out more details about the internships by visiting The Crown Estate's Marine Internship webpage here.

Marine Futures East Coast Internship:

Josh Brown:

Having begun university studying genetics, I quickly realised I would rather be outside helping conserve nature rather than stuck in a lab. I completed a BSc in Zoology at The University Sheffield and a MSc in Marine Biology at Bangor University. I can’t wait to get stuck into a more applied sector of marine sciences and test myself on this internship.

Ryan Bearman:

My time at the University of Plymouth gave me a deep appreciation for the marine environment. During my time there, I achieved both, a bachelors degree in BA Geography and a masters in Sustainable Environmental Management. These experiences sparked my interest in marine conservation, and I am looking forward to learning more about the sector throughout this internship.

Abigail O'Leary:

I’ve always loved the marine environment and been interested by how we interact with the Earth’s systems. I completed a masters in Global Sustainability Solutions at Exeter University to further study this, before working with the Galapagos Conservation Trust, the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, and environmental education charity Another Way.

Alex Wright:

I’ve just graduated with a master's degree in Zoology having spent the last four years at university building a passion for marine conservation. I’m particularly looking forward to spending some time offshore at the wind farms for the kittiwake surveys.

Bronwen Fleming:

Growing up on Ynys Môn, I was surrounded by natural beauty and knew I wanted to be part of protecting it for future generations. My Environmental Management and Sustainability BSc led me into a wide range of jobs within the environmental charity sector.

Gregory Miles:

I graduated in 2023 with an MSc in Global Ecology and Conservation from Cardiff University and in 2013 with a BSc in Zoology from Aberystwyth University and spent my gap (ten) year(s) travelling the world, volunteering in marine conservation and working within wildlife charity and terrestrial ecology.

Coastal Explorer Internship:

Ben Long:

I have recently graduated from the University of Exeter with a master’s degree in Marine Environmental Management, where my thesis focused on the biodiversity value of Cornish seagrass meadows. I have previously worked for an ecological consultancy and volunteered as Seasonal Seal Warden on Lundy Island during the Atlantic grey seal pupping season.

Hannah Newnham:

I have recently graduated from Newcastle University with a BSc in Marine Biology. Throughout my degree and other experiences, I have developed a keen interest in sustainable management of the seas - working as an intern monitoring for Invasive Non-Native Species, undertaking a placement in the Environmental Consents and Management team at RWE Renewables, and working part time for an offshore wind consultancy.
