MDE User Case Study: MDE data used to validate Scotwind screening model

To celebrate the use of marine industry data, we have created “MDE User Case Studies”.

In this series of articles, we will be showcasing the different ways that data hosted on the MDE is helping to shape the future of our seas. From academics, to GIS experts, marine industry consultants and more, learn how YOU can shape the future of our seas, through open and accessible data & evidence.

TGS has used the Crown Estate’s wind measurement library to validate the results of a new, high resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) model over the north of the UK to screen the leases available in the 2021 Scotwind lease round.

This numerical weather prediction model is designed to reconstruct meteorological conditions from the last 10 years at a spatial resolution of 1km with an hourly temporal resolution. This provides operators interested in the Scotwind lease round with a unique, immediately available data resource that can evaluate wind conditions over the Scotwind leases.

Wind Measurements from the MDE have been used to validate the results of the NWP to increase the confidence of the model and further improve data quality in comparison with publicly available wind model information.

TGS are expanding this dataset over the wider North Sea and over other active and expected offshore wind lease rounds areas including in the USA. In 2021 TGS acquired market intelligence providers 4C Offshore, allowing the results of these NWP models to be integrated with information from their Foresee database to provide a range of insights related to wind resources in these areas.

Other projects that have benefited from the MDE data

Have you used some of the MDE data for your project?

If so, we'd love to hear about it. We want the data from the MDE to benefit others; to facilitate innovation and to encourage collaboration. What better way to do this than by raising awareness of how the MDE data has already been used and showcasing the work that others are doing.
